bedscapes (2021)
multi-media installation

Bedscapes comprises two primary components: a video display and a life-sized fabric print.

The video element immerses the viewer in an exploration of bedrooms through computer-generated images. It exhibits intricately detailed beds marked by rumpled sheets, dispersed belongings, and occasional signs of use. These beds are presented akin to landscapes, with the camera perspective gliding gently across the soft peaks and valleys of the sheets and bedding. It's a subtle exploration of private domains, often shielded from the outside world.

In stark contrast to the immersive digital display, the physical counterpart of the installation consists of a cotton sheet spread out on the floor before the screen. It is imprinted with a life-sized rendering of digital bed sheets, offering a tactile representation of a digital creation and sparking thought on the physical embodiment of digital intimacy.

To create the 3D renditions used in the video, photographs of actual beds were transformed into virtual replicas using a process called photogrammetry. The printed sheet, conversely, was born in the digital world, modeled in a 3D program, and then brought to life in the physical world.

This installation was conceived during a ten-day artistic residency in Kyustendil, Bulgaria. Each bed brought to life in the exhibit originally belonged to a fellow participant of the residency. The project explores how personal, intimate spaces can be digitized and then reimagined in the physical world.

A big thanks to all the participants of RESET 2021 and the team and mentors of Kontempora Art Residency.
